Dot-com bubble (2000–2001)

Yahoo! stock doubled in price in the last month of 1999.[20] On January 3, 2000, at the height of the Dot-com boom, Yahoo! stocks closed at an all-time high of $118.75 a share. Sixteen days later, shares in Yahoo! Japan became the first stocks in Japanese history to trade at over ¥100,000,000, reaching a price of ¥101.4 million ($94,780 at that time).[21]

On February 7, 2000, the Yahoo! domain was brought to a halt for a few hours as it was the victim of a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS).[22] On the next day, its shares rose about $16, or 4.5 percent as the failure was blamed on hackers rather than on an internal glitch, unlike a fault with eBay earlier that year.

During the dot-com boom, the cable news station CNBC also reported that Yahoo! and eBay were discussing a 50/50 merger.[23] Although the merger never materialized the two companies decided to form a marketing/advertising alliance six years later in 2006.[24]

On June 26, 2000, Yahoo! and Google signed an agreement which retained Google as the default worldwide-web search engine for Yahoo! following a beta trial in 1999.

Early history (1994–1999) of yahoo

In January 1994, Jerry Yang and David Filo were Electrical Engineering graduate students at Stanford University. In April 1994, "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web" was renamed "Yahoo!", for which the official backronym is "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle".[11][12] Filo and Yang said they selected the name because they liked the word's general definition, which comes from Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift: "rude, unsophisticated and uncouth".[13] Its URL was akebono.stanford.edu/yahoo.[14]

The Yahoo! domain was created on January 18, 1995.[15] Yang and Filo realized their website had massive business potential, and on March 1, 1995, Yahoo! was incorporated.[16] On April 5, 1995, Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital provided Yahoo! with two rounds of venture capital, raising approximately $3 million.[17][18] On April 12, 1996, Yahoo! had its initial public offering, raising $33.8 million, by selling 2.6 million shares at $13 each.

Like many web search engines and web directories, Yahoo! diversified into a web portal. In the late 1990s, Yahoo!, MSN, Lycos, Excite and other Web portals were growing rapidly. Web portal providers rushed to acquire companies to expand their range of services, in the hope of increasing the time a user stayed at the portal.

On March 8, 1997, Yahoo acquired online communications company Four11. Four11's webmail service, RocketMail, became Yahoo! Mail. Yahoo! also acquired ClassicGames.com and turned it into Yahoo! Games. Yahoo! then acquired direct marketing company Yoyodyne Entertainment, Inc. on October 12. On March 8, 1998, Yahoo! launched Yahoo! Pager,[19] an instant messaging service that was renamed Yahoo! Messenger a year later. On January 28, 1999, Yahoo! acquired web hosting provider GeoCities. Another company Yahoo! acquired was eGroups, which became Yahoo! Groups after the acquisition on June 28, 2000.

When acquiring companies, Yahoo! often changed the relevant terms of service. For example, they claimed intellectual property rights for content on their servers, unlike the companies they acquired. As a result, many of the acquisitions were controversial and unpopular with users of the existing services.

3. DOMAIN REGISTRATION
If you register a new domain name in conjunction with the Service, the following terms also apply:

(a) Yahoo! has chosen Internet Names Worldwide (a division of Melbourne IT Limited), or "INWW," an ICANN accredited registrar for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domain names, to provide domain name registration services. You hereby authorize Yahoo! to acquire your selected domain name from INWW. In order to receive a domain name, you must agree to INWW's terms and conditions located at http://domains.yahoo.com/inwwagree.html for .com, .net, .org, .biz and .info domain names and http://domains.yahoo.com/inwwagree_us.html for .us domain names, as may be amended. You understand that you are creating a separate contractual relationship between you and INWW, and that you, and not Yahoo!, are responsible for all fees, liability, and obligations in connection with that relationship.

Until the Service is cancelled or otherwise terminated, Yahoo! will pay on your behalf the domain registration/renewal fees as part of the Service. You agree that your obligations to indemnify under "Indemnity" in these Terms (Section 14) includes any claim or demand associated with your domain name, any domain name pre-registration services provided through the Service, or the INWW terms and conditions.
(b) You will be listed as the registrant and administrative contact in connection with your domain name, unless you choose another registrant and administrative contact. If you choose a registrant and administrative contact other than yourself, such person(s) must enter into an agreement directly with the INWW and, additionally, will be bound by this Agreement in addition to you. You hereby authorize Yahoo! to list itself as the billing contact, technical contact and name server in connection with your domain name and to take any actions Yahoo! deems appropriate in those capacities. However, upon termination of the Service, Yahoo! may immediately cease acting in those capacities and reserves the right to transfer your account to INWW for collection of past-due amounts. In the event of such transfer, you authorize INWW to serve as the billing contact, technical contact and name server in connection with your domain name, and to take any actions the INWW deems appropriate in those capacities. Upon termination of the Service, Yahoo! will not be responsible for forwarding any notices, emails or other correspondence to you or to taking any other actions in connection with your domain name. You will be solely responsible for all ongoing fees, as well as removing Yahoo! as the billing, technical contact and name servers in connection with your domain name, unless

Picking a Domain Name

You'll need a domain name for your store. A domain name is the "something.com" piece of a web address (or .org, .biz, .whatever). For instance, in the URL www.yahoo.com/index.html, the domain name is the yahoo.com piece. If you've already registered a domain name with a service, that's fine; you'll be able to point it to your Yahoo! store later. Or you can register a domain name during the sign-up process, and Yahoo! will throw it in at no extra charge. But how do you pick a name? Spend a little time thinking about this. It's not easy picking a domain name because most good ones have already been taken! Here are a few things to consider:

* Pick a name that is easy to understand. If you read the domain name on the radio, would listeners be able to understand (and spell!) it?
* If you already have a business name, you really need a domain name that matches (which isn't always possible, of course).
* If at all possible, pick a .com domain, not a .org, .biz, or .anything else. The world thinks .com, and if you select a different one many people may not notice and might end up at the wrong site.
* If all the domains you want have already been purchased, try combining words. Try mixing your primary word with a color or location name (city, state, etc.), a store-type word (store, depot, warehouse, shop, etc.), or something else. Sometimes the only way to get a domain that works for you is by building a combination.
* If your domain name can be confused with any other name-in particular plurals, singulars, and common spelling mistakes-you need to register both terms. You need the one you want and the "confused" term. Registering cooldoll.com? Then you also need cooldolls.com. Getting jobadvisory.com? You also need jobadvisery.com, jobsadvisory.com, and jobsadvisery.com.
* Yahoo! provides a pretty good "brainstorming" tool; you tell it what domain you want, and it suggests alternatives. Spend a little time to make sure you get a good domain name.

Avoid "domain confusion." Don't register a domain name that is likely to be confused with another. Don't register royalsaunas.com if someone else owns royalsauna.com, or bluesauna.org if someone else has bluesauna.com. If you market heavily using the domain name, some of the traffic will go to the other domain, possibly a competitor!

domains yahoo

Having put up more than a few Web sites myself, one of the easiest ways I've found to get your domains set up and running is to simply go through Yahoo.

Yahoo will register your domains' names for under $10 a year, though as of this writing, Yahoo is having a sale on domains for $2.99 per year. That's a lot cheaper than some registrars I've seen that are still trying to charge $20 or more just for domains.

Once you get your domain registered, you still need to host it somewhere. Again, Yahoo has a simple answer, or several simple answers, in its Geocities service. You can plunk down your domains for free at Yahoo Geocities, but you'll have ads. For a nominal fee ($4.95 per month) you can get 500 MB storage and 25 GB per month transfer -- that's more than enough for most starter sites.

If you host your domains through Yahoo Geocities, you'll get plenty of tools to help you design and manage your site, enough to do just about anything legal you might want to do on the Net.

You'll have access to Yahoo web page templates as well as a point-and-click designer, in addition to the ability to manually play with your domains' HTML.

Yahoo also gives you choices for uploading, using their easy upload manager or the more traditional FTP for large sites. E-mail is part of the package.

A recent addition to the Yahoo Geocities tools is the ability to start and manage a blog on your domains.

All in all, registering and hosting your domains through Yahoo is an easy solution for a home user or small business.
